Marilyn Folson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1947.  She has degrees in Arts, Fine Arts and Education.  Before becoming a doll artist full time, she worked for many years as a high school art teacher.    She now lives in Gimli, Manitoba, on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg, with her artist husband and not-so-artistically-inclined toy poodle.

ARTIST  STATEMENT:

Fascinated by the aging process, I want to record the physical changes that become evident as we age.  I am also interested in costume, in the clothing choices we make that can reflect our economic status, personality and even life experiences. Further, I am interested in gestures and facial expressions that can reveal how an individual meets the challenges and changes that are inevitable in old age.

The dolls are not  portraits of specific people, but  composites emerging from memory and becoming narrative.  For me, a doll is a success when it evokes feelings or triggers memories in the viewer, when the viewer completes the narrative, interpreting the piece in light of his or her own experience. I choose dollmaking as an artform because dolls are accessible and invite this exchange.
